Creative Rock N Roll Rainbow Wedding in Winnipeg

Sam and Evan’s rock-n-roll themed rainbow wedding was definitely a career highlight for me. Everything about it was SO creative, so well thought-out. They clearly put in so much effort to consider making their wedding an amazing experience for all of their guests, as well as for themselves. The personalization level was top-notch. The music was amazing. The ceremony was so engaging.

And obviously, the florals were 🤌🏻 You know I LIVE for colour and this palette and overall design that Soiree Event Planning created was just DIVINE and such a delight to flower for.

There are endless things to say about how wonderful this wedding was. They hosted their guests on Sam’s parent’s private property in Charleswood — it’s one of those amazing places where you don’t realize the yard is going to be big enough and then you walk out the back door and discover that it’s TOTALLY PERFECT.

The ceremony faced the river, with a clear top tent installed beside it. Guests entered through the house, enjoyed a welcome cocktail on the patio, and then walked across the shaded lawn to a long, narrow aisle. Samantha’s walk down the aisle was breathtaking — it was deliciously dramatic, with her beige veil with custom embroidery catching the breeze.

The couple are music lovers, and came up with a clever wedding slogan: “Stairway to Evan.” This was embroidered on Sam’s veil and it was just so stunning. And I mean, her dress. Yes. I know that a colourful dress is not for everyone, but I think we can all agree that her gown was spectacular.

Given the colour in her dress, I wanted to minimize the colours in her bouquet. We definitely wanted to hit the creamy/beige tones, and the red. I decided to add in the violet to play off the rest and just love how it worked. This was one of my fave bouquets of the year, and Sam’s, too — Sam had it preserved by Stephanie Singh in Toronto and sent me a picture of her tear drops on the box as she packed it up! Click here to see how it turned into an incredible art piece.

Bridal Bouquet Ingredients: anthurium, nina and sahara roses, lavender sweet pea, red ranunculus, and lavender phalaenopsis orchids.

Sam’s career is in the colour world, so she had a ton of Pantone swatches that she thought could be used. Enter, the creative genius of Michelle from Soiree. She took the couple’s love for Big White (the ski hill where they first met, had their first kiss, and have vacationed many times) and transformed these Pantone swatches into an art piece / photo backdrop inspired by the mountain ranges.

The Big White theme kept coming, with this incredible seating chart also conceptualized by Soiree. They took the run map and created individual lift tags for each guest, which told guests which table they were at as well as became their ticket to get into the after party. ADORABLE.

And obviously, we added some slick colour blocked floral to enhance it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve done a rainbow wedding with Soiree — we did one at Whitetail Meadow a few years ago, but with a very different overall style. Take a look!

OHHHHKAY. The ceremony florals were my favourite. Evan constructed the open air chapel beams — amazing. We went back and forth on a few ideas for aisle florals, and always knew that we wanted a dramatic altar with colour-blocked floral pillars. They needed to be pretty tall and full to suit the scale of the white aisle beams.

Down the aisle, I decided to grow up clustered florals around the chapel uprights. We wanted to camoflauge any grass damage (there wasn’t much, in the end) and just blend amp up the colour and the garden-inspired ambiance even more.

I could have lived here happily for the rest of my life.

And here comes the tent! The Soiree team worked SO diligently on this layout to maximize the design and it paid off. White linens paired with clear and smoke chairs, to set a minimal base. The tables were carefully laid out to colour block the entire tent. We decided on three different centrepiece styles (a full floral arrangement in a compote, a low floral arrangement with no visible vase, and a clustering of unique stem and smaller vases), per colour. This meant that my team never made the same arrangement more than 3 or 4 times — it was so refreshing and creatively inspiring.

My favourite part of the tablescapes was the custom-made, colour-blocked velvet charger plates. The Soiree team handmade them all and anytime I asked them “isn’t that going to be a big project?!” Michelle would say, “oh, it’s not bad! You just do this and do this and and and” and I was astonished. But the effort was OBVIOUSLY worth it.

The head table was so perfectly coordinated to hit the entire rainbow palette with detailed colour-blocking. The charger plates lined up perfectly with the centrepieces, and lined up perfectly with the seating. You’ll notice a mix of velvet and leather chairs and sofas used for seating for the wedding party at the head table, and we sprinkled in bud vases and candles in the entire range of colours down the length of the table. So fun!

I also had Meg Does Pottery, a local artist, create a couple of ADORABLE bud vases custom for the head table in the red/lilac palette. They’re on my shelf and I will love them forever.

Deanna, Emily, Vanessa, Andrea, Chad, Tricia — thank you all SO much. My hands certainly couldn’t have gotten this much done alone.

Read on for my 5 top tips to design a beautiful tent wedding!

PS Before you scroll too far, open up this Pinterest Board in another tab! Here you’ll find more awesome tent wedding ideas 😘

  1. Pay Attention to the Colour Palette

Tent weddings usually mean lots of green (grass) and lots of white (tent walls). This makes it really easy to design a classic white and green wedding, but if you’re working with a different colour palette, you really need find ways to incorporate your palette to make it stand out!

My favourite way to bring a colour palette to life is actually with the table linens. Upgrading to coloured table linens makes a massive difference simply because of the large amount of visual real estate that table linens take up. Choose the foundational colour in your palette so that you can make the rest of the palette sing with other accents, like your centrepieces.

2. Play with the Floor Plan

One of the awesome bonuses of a tent is that you are not restricted to any structural barriers, nor do you have to feel like you have to follow any set of rules. You can do whatever you want! Mix of long banquet and round tables? Do it. Want to put the head table right in the middle of the floor plan? Love it.

Choose what you want to be the focal point of the tent, and design your floor plan around it.

4. Incorporate Unique Lighting

Enlist the help of a great lighting team. Frequently, tent weddings take place outside of the city where it gets really nice and dark in the evening. Whether you want bistro string lighting, classic chandeliers, or a collection of casual textured basket lanterns, some sort of overhead lighting will make a large impact on the overall ambiance. And, of course, don’t forget about the power of candlelight, flickering low to the table all night long.

My go-to lighting experts here in Winnipeg are Event Light. They cover everything power-related (thank goodness, because I don’t think I’m alone in not knowing what any of that means), they’ve got a great inventory of stylish lighting options, and they also have all the tall ladders I ever need to hang flowers 😉

3. Make a Grand Entrance Statement

Tents are often large, and with the side panels open, guests can trickle in from anywhere. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the flow of traffic can feel a little directionless, so establishing a focal point can make an enormous difference to your guests' experience. I love taking this opportunity to create a gorgeous entrance to the tent that also serves a purpose: welcoming guests, guiding them to their tables, and adding to the overall event design. This could be a large floral installation or oversized floral urns flanking the entrance, an expertly designed seating chart or escort card table, or a welcome table set with champagne. Create a focal point, designed with a purpose, and add something extra to the guests’ experience.

5. Upgrade Your Rentals

This one is a big one for me: upgrade your rentals, people!! Caterers often include a very basic set of plates, glasses, and cutlery but we’re talking BASIC. Not at all beautiful. Coloured glassware, layered dishware, elegant metallic flatware, a coloured napkin…these things make a HUGE difference in your overall event design. Don’t forget about the chairs — the basic white folding resin chairs that are available from most tent companies are fine, but they don’t necessarily fit with every aesthetic.

how To Make your Tent Wedding the Best - STone House Creative

Here are a few more ideas to make your tent wedding the BEST:

  • If space allows, incorporate a great lounge area. Many typical venues will have some sort of entry area with couches and chairs where people can relax post-dinner if they aren’t interested in dancing. A tent doesn’t have that opportunity, so build it in to your plans! If your wedding is in summer, place a lounge outside the tent under a tree, rent some great soft seating (here are some of my faves!) — don’t forget about adding a coffee table and end tables for drinks to be placed on! — and create a great atmosphere.

  • Make sure your guests are comfortable with either portable heating systems or fans. And if it can be a misting fan, all the better.

If your wedding is in spring or fall, a clear top tent is your secret weapon: the greenhouse effect created keeps the atmosphere a little more toasty and gives you a little more natural heat.

  • Hire pros. Hire hire hire. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard people say, “We’re just going to make it easy and have a tent wedding.” LOL guys. Since when is building a venue from scratch in your own yard easy?? But if you hire the right professionals, it can be both easy AND beautiful. This starts with a planner who is well-versed in tent weddings and knows how to take care of all of the logistics — because there are a lot of them. If you need some recommendations, just ask away :)

Best Tips for a Tent Wedding in Winnipeg - Wedding Florists winnipeg

Proof of how amazing the misting fans are! On a hot summer day, a misting fan is the little piece of heaven you didn’t know you needed. This one is available through Event LIght.

Organic Tent Wedding on Private Estate

Kristin and Sam’s organic tent wedding on his family’s private estate was a MAJOR highlight of 2020 for me! Their date was originally scheduled for late June, but they pushed it back into late August with a backup date on the calendar for 2021, as well. They ended up deciding to just go forward in August with as large of a guest list as they would be allowed to, and it turned out that it was scheduled for the perfect time, in that summertime covid lull.

They ended up deciding to just go forward in August with as large of a guest list as they would be allowed to, and it turned out that it was scheduled for the perfect time, in that summertime covid lull.

Let me tell you: this property COULD NOT HAVE BEEN COOLER. Right on the Red River and less than 10 minutes outside of the city, with multiple cabins dating back decades, towering trees and a creek running through…it was so, so amazing.

Blush, cream, and sage is a timeless palette and Kristin wanted to keep the floral elements fairly simple, especially for the bouquets. This really allowed the incredible setting to take centre stage and caused the flowers to support the surroundings instead of compete with them.

Bridal Bouquet Ingredients: white o’hara garden roses, quicksand roses, blushing bride protea, white ranunculus, olive foliage, gunni and seeded eucalyptus foliages.

Kristin handmade this arch! She built it at home in Vancouver, then took it apart and shipped it here to Winnipeg in time for the wedding. She also designed all of her stationery, created her table numbers and escort cards, and some really cool acrylic signage. Quite creative! I wouldn’t have had a chance of making those details myself.

I love the statement these florals make. Again, it’s simple but appropriate in size and scale and really brought a garden-inspired feel. The ceremony overlooked the Red River, and with the tree line behind, it really couldn’t have been a more gorgeous location.

When you’re so tired mid-day that you just need to take a little break with your bridesmaids 😴

When I did a site tour with Andrea from Soiree Event Planning, we were both so struck with this tree. The shape of it! The size! It is just a perfect tree. We knew it needed to be used somehow, and I’m so glad that she suggested using it as a lounge setting. Wouldn’t you want to relax a little under this gorgeous tree? All of the lounge rental furniture was from Trend Decor and I particularly love those rattan armchairs. The addition of the rattan textures (lanterns, rug, chairs) brought a casual feeling element to the overall event design that was really nice.

Reception time! They installed 2 separate tents, one for dinner (with tons of space for the tables to be really spread out), and a smaller one with a lounge, dessert table and live music (this was also the backup location for the ceremony). We lightly strung greenery along the entire tent ceiling, and added greenery and florals to Event Light’s basket lanterns above the head table and above the bar. I loved this element — it felt really special and was one of those small touches that went a long way to creating an amazing atmosphere.

The floor plan included both round tables and harvest style banquet tables, all with a heavy amount of floral and candles added.

Since covid, a lot of couples have chosen an open-side tent. With every panel open, the flow of traffic can feel a little directionless, so establishing a focal point can make an enormous difference to your guests' experience. I loved using this opportunity to create a gorgeous entrance to the tent that also served a purpose: welcoming guests, guiding them to their tables, and adding to the overall event design.

One of my favourite design elements was actually the containers that I used, which might not be that excited to pretty much anyone else. Soiree’s design brief incorporated a lot of natural textures, so I selected a pottery compote and matching longer oval vessel along with ceramic stem vases. We also decided to use sandstone pillar candles instead of plain white, to bring a little more warmth to the overall palette.

The round table featured a floral piece in a compote with a little more of the blush tones in them (so they stood out from the white linens), and the harvest tables incorporated an elongated centrepiece in the centre, along with a lot of stem vases with petite arrangements. I loved the copper flatware they chose for the visual interest it brought.

Believe me when I say this — it was SO HOT. These misting fans were absolute life savers. I spent a fair amount of time in front of this one, myself 😂They were stationed around the dinner tent and around the lounges and dessert area as well. Thank goodness!

Outdoor Tent Wedding with Misting Fans - Winnipeg Weddings

A huge thanks to my amazing team of freelancers who helped make this floral magic come together! My associate designer Deanna of Deer Dutch Creative, Kyla Ferguson, and Erika Tata. Each of them played such an important role, and together we all kept our heads (and our cool) on an insanely hot week. They also had the thrilling job of lifting and positioning sheets of plywood for me to drive the scissor lift on, and doing that inside of a clear tent is basically like doing heavy lifting in a greenhouse 😓

“For us, it was important to get married in 2020 as we had already been engaged for 18 months. We knew if we postponed to 2021 we would have decided not to have a reception at all and perhaps elope at a later date (not a desirable outcome — I just didn't see us waiting a whole other year for a party). Instead, we pushed the date up from the beginning of September to the end of July. Our wonderful wedding planner advised us to do so, to help ensure that the weather was nicer into the evening hours as another big plan change was moving the wedding to be an outdoor tent wedding instead of a predominantly indoor wedding at our prior wedding venue.

We got married and had the reception at my sister-in-law's property and reduced the guest count from about 140 to 55. The reduction in guests was two-fold 1) to adhere with the ever-changing gathering size regulations that seemed to be a moving target up until the wedding date, and 2) a lot of our original guest list was made up of out-of-towners who, because of Manitoba COVID regulations at the time, couldn't visit the province regardless.

Garden Inspired Toffee Rose Bridal Bouquet - Stone House Creative

Margeaux came to me with just a couple of inspiration photos (along with a full design board created by her planner, Alli Mae Events) and she really loved the bleached foliage look and dried flowers. I knew that toffee roses would be the perfect bit of warm colour for her, and while she didn’t want a lot of greenery, I was excited when she liked my idea to incorporate some cool toned foliage.

Bridal bouquet ingredients: toffee roses, dried and fresh ranunculus, strawflower, lisianthus, amaranthus, knifeblade acacia foliage, copper tinted plumosa, and bleached ruscus, ferns, and bunny tails.

We planned a few things to make our guests feel more comfortable and follow social distancing guidelines including, having hand sanitizer vials for each guest on all tables as a practical wedding favour, having a portable hand washing station for guests to wash with clean water and soap, reconfiguring the dinner table layout with only small tables that would fit the guests’ immediate bubble (no more than 4 people at each table) and each table was spaced out.

Warm Colour Palette Bridesmaid Dresses - Summer Wedding in Winnipeg

The plan was always to keep the wedding party’s florals simple — the girls were originally going to carry just a single rose! So it wasn’t a hard decision to cut those out with the Covid re-plans. We were very grateful for Alli (pictured below), the bride’s sister AND the woman behind Alli Mae Events! She led us all through the replan with grace and enthusiasm.

Winnipeg Wedding Planned by Alli Mae Events - Stone House Creative

Margeaux and Ryan had a specific floral budget and they wanted to keep as close to that number as possible. Alli Mae Events wisely advised them to put the focus on Margeaux’s bouquet and on the ceremony installation, and keep the rest simple. We were able to keep the plan for the ceremony florals intact from the original wedding to the covid wedding, and I was so glad because I loved our plan!

I designed a ground-based semi-circle nest incorporating a lot of dried florals, bleached foliages, foraged items, and of course, toffee roses! I wanted it to be highly textural, warm, and unique.

This was made of 4 separate pieces, which were re-purposed to various reception spots.

Covid REscheduled Wedding - Wedding Planning in Winnipeg

The hardest decision to move forward with a wedding in 2020 was knowing that we wouldn't be able to have all of our out of town friends and family. I have a lot of out of town friends that I am very close with, and it was hard to make the decision that they wouldn't be able to celebrate with us. Once I got over that part, everything else came together and was just as beautiful and special as I could have ever imagined.

Luckily we were able to maintain all of our wedding vendors (everyone was available on that date) except our venue, so all the other planning elements (flowers, food, etc.) were exactly as we had originally discussed. In transitioning the plan, some things were easier and felt more casual and more "us," but there were also some aspects that made it more challenging. In moving to a backyard wedding, our family, bridal party and ourselves had a lot more setup work to do. We ran all over the city picking up equipment, tables and chairs, then dropping off all the rentals afterwards. It definitely felt like we had to "work" for the wedding day which wasn't exactly the most romantic thing.

The tent was actually situated in the front yard of the property, with the walls open and cocktail sized tables spaced 6 feet apart throughout. I thought this was such a great idea for seating — rather than renting the usual 8 person tables, they specifically designed the seating arrangements around family groupings and guests’s “bubbles.” Each table had just 2-4 seats at it.

We alternated the table centrepieces between a simple candle design and petite floral arrangements in the pottery bud vases I have in my rental inventory. I really like the mahogany folding chairs they chose — they’re both cost-effective and really clean lined, so they’re easy to design with without being a super boring white chair. They upgraded the place setting details with the Contessa plates and copper flatware from C&T Rentals.

The ceremony pieces were positioned around the cocktail area, marking the bases of the lighting poles, along with one piece marking the sweetheart table.

A word of advice for other couples up against COVID: just do it! Those who can't make your wedding will be supportive of your decision. No one knows what the future holds, so you have to do what's right for you in this moment. Make a list of your top 50 guests (I know, it's hard) and plan a predominantly outdoor ceremony if you want to have more than 10 guests. Don't compromise on anything else — have the food, flowers, dress and photographer that you've always wanted because it's still your special day regardless of the number of people physically present. Take time as a couple after the wedding, even if it's just a staycation and Netflix marathon, to stay present and celebrate your new marriage.

We had the best day. We absolutely loved our wedding, and looking back, I am so happy we had a more intimate celebration. It felt good being able to talk to every guest and spend time with everyone at the wedding.

Muted Cotton Candy Pastel Wedding at Pineridge Hollow

My favourite thing about Janelle and Kenny’s summer wedding at Pineridge Hollow was hands-down the colour palette: we chose a watery, muted oyster palette with dusty pinks, light blues, and lavenders. When I picked up my flower order and saw how the flowers were starting to come together, I got REALLY excited. Like, really excited. It was like a cotton candy dream come true! And just look at how beautiful the colours with the bridesmaids’ dresses were!

I think it’s pretty obvious why I loved these flowers :) It was such a lovely combination! Janelle wanted her bouquet to be a pretty good size but not too huge, and designed in a modern cascading style. The bridesmaids carried simpler handtied bouquets, all to coordinate with Janelle’s - isn’t that cotton candy pastel palette to die for?

Bridal Bouquet ingredients: several varieties of roses, dahlias, locally grown lisianthus and zinnias, delphinium, blue bells, and globe thistle with this gorgeous trailing jasmine and nagi foliages to help create that cascading shape. It’s pretty hard to choose a favourite ingredient in these bouquets, but I think it’s a tie between the “zinderella” zinnias and the globe thistle for me!

The wedding ceremony took place in front of the gardens at Pineridge Hollow, which were beautifully in bloom! I really went for it with this large, asymmetrical floral piece added to the arch. I loved adding in the very long, full branches of white poplar - they add a ton of texture thanks to the leaf’s shape and colour variegation, and of course, the shape that the full, arching stems creates can’t be beat. Mauve roses and pink lisianthus filled out the florals! We also added simple greenery bouquets down the aisle. I don’t normally recommend doing too much down the aisle as I personally prefer to keep the focus at the front, but these guys were super cute and definitely added to the woodsy feel.

Inside the tent, Janelle created a really great floor plan with a mix of both rectangular and round tables. White linens, mahogany chivari chairs and gold accents set the perfect neutral backdrop. The round tables had a low floral arrangement, with a touch more vibrancy than the bouquets but overall a very similar palette, and the rectangular tables featured loose greenery tucked along the length of the table (PSA the tables at Pineridge Hollow are quite narrow, so just keep that in mind if you’re planning a wedding there!) with individual roses in blush and mauve and gold candleholders added in. It was a very full table, but looked beautiful!
