Sweet Simplicity Spring Wedding at the Pavilion

Last May, I had the pleasure of designing two weddings at the Pavilion at Assiniboine Park. The first was kind of a modern take on a garden-inspired design, and the second was Gwen and Gavin’s simple, intimate, blush and peach wedding.

Gwen’s style is very feminine and romantic, and she wanted her ceremony arch to be the centrepiece of the floral design.

It’s always good to keep a bride’s frame in mind — I knew that Gwen was petite with tiny hands, and we didn’t want anything too large. And when I gave her her bouquet, I was astonished because what looked so small in my hands looked full and large in hers!

Bridal bouquet ingredients: ranunculus, sweet pea, sweet escimo roses, freesia, baby’s breath, and sahara sensation spray roses.

Oh I loved designing this arch! I really like the deconstructed arch base — it’s so easy to do so many different designs on it. Gwen wanted a lot of baby’s breath and we went with a modern garden style, tucking in peach and light pink florals with lots of stem length.

With about 30 guests, the room had more than enough space to keep the ceremony and reception in the same room. The morning ceremony was followed by brunch, and we decided on 4 banquet tables set with Planned Perfectly’s toffee linen (see how nicely they can skew pink?) with gold chivari chairs. We decided on mixed pink, peach, and white florals with an airy feel. Sweet, simple, lovely!

Clear Top Tent Wedding at Home with Luscious Florals

Jen grew up with grandparents who worked in the flower growing and gardening industries in England, so she wanted to prioritize the flowers — and I was not going to say no to that! Knowing how much of an impact flowers make on the overall design, this couldn't have been a better decision -- especially for a couple who aren't afraid of colour!

After changes in date, venue, and even province, we re-envisioned the wedding design 3 months before the new date. What was originally to be a July wedding, and then a destination wedding in BC, was re-planned during Covid for August, back in Winnipeg. I was SO excited to get their email saying it was back on, in Winnipeg, and that I’d get to be a part of their day!

Happy New Year! I’m excited to keep sharing my recent weddings and giving insights into your wedding planning…so let’s start thing off with Jen and Johann’s clear top tent wedding at home, with luscious florals!

Wedding 3.0 included plans for an intimate ceremony at the gorgeous Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in front of the pond, followed by a clear top tent reception in Johann's dad's yard in Old Tuxedo, which called for a mature but still vibrant colour palette, focusing on a range of pinks, moving from a darker berry tone all the way down to a beigey blush.

Jen wanted luscious florals, an oversized and very garden-inspired bridal bouquet. Their late-August wedding date meant I was able to include some of my favourite locally grown flowers, including lisianthus, cosmos, and scabiosa. Her bouquet also featured quicksand roses and Darcy garden roses, blush ranunculus, and I rounded it out with olive foliage and trailing jasmine vine. When describing what she wanted, Jen told me, “the weirder the better” and so I had a lot of fun with this bouquet! It was huge, and had a really cool shape with lots of movement and depth.

I LOVE the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden — I think it’s one of the most beautiful places in the entire city (fun fact: my sister unveiled one of the statues!). We wanted to make a floral statement, but I also wanted something that fit well in the small space and didn’t take away from the view.

I decided on a bit of a floral nest, with ground-based pieces full of flowers that brought colour and fragrance without overpowering the gorgeous pond.

Jen also asked for large arrangements in gold urns to be set at the entrance to the aisle, which makes for a really welcoming and beautiful walk down the aisle!

For the reception, the clear top tent was situated in Johann’s dad’s front yard. We decided on a dusty rose velvet linen, and a few floral focal pieces to carry the design throughout: a large olive branch arrangement for the champagne table, we re-purposed the ceremony pieces to become a killer entrance of the small tent, and popped luscious centrepieces in bronze urns on each table, surrounded by smoke glass votive holders.

Jen had worked closely with Leech Letter Co to design a custom stationery suite for the original wedding plans, including an adorable wax seal featuring their puppy's silhouette, and then added an insert with the new details from Minted, with the phrasing "Okay, new plan..." that was the perfect way to add a little lightness to the situation!

The guest list was kept quite small, and they utilized both the front yard (for the tent and welcome champagne table), and the back yard pool area (for cocktail hour and then again to party away the night…rumour has it, Jen might have taken a midnight dip!). Round guest tables were situated in the tent, while cocktail tables dotted the backyard around the pool, on which I placed a few petite floral arrangements to tie it all together.

Obviously I couldn’t help but float all my leftover roses in the pool!

Outdoor Summer Love at the Manitoba Club

When it looked like the 2020 wedding season was shot, every wedding vendor decided to get involved in some styled photo shoots. They’re a great way to work alongside friends, stretch our creative muscles, at the same time as generating content to show you all what we can do!

But then, as it goes, wedding season was far busier than I expected it to be, I committed to multiple styled shoots, and my life became absurdly busy lol!

I’d love for you to dive into this outdoor summer love shoot at the Manitoba Club!

Andrea from Soiree Event Planning approached me to be a part of this shoot, with the direction of playful colour and some modern elements. We knew it was going to be outside at the Bonnycastle Gardens at the Manitoba Club, which is a gorgeous spot for an intimate summer wedding, or even just for a ceremony once we can get back to indoor parties.

With that modern direction, I knew I wanted to design the bouquet without any foliage, and keep the size on the smaller side, layering blooms over each other and keeping them a little bit tighter.

How much do you think this bridal bouquet costs?

Cappuccinno Roses
Cafe Latte Roses

Lisianthus*
And finished with hand died silk ribbon from Tono & Co

I love the way this tablescape blends a clean, modern design with a feminine colour palette and some girly details. I LOVE a good place setting, and this layering of grey and green coloured plates and the rose napkin really draws me in. The replication of the pink in the menu, and of the grey in the stone place card (which are laser etched with the guests’ names — gorgeous!!) makes this even better!

These kind of details are a really easy way to elevate your wedding design, and carry your style through the entire tablescape. Something as simple as the way your napkin is folded can make a huge difference!

If you’re seating your guests at rectangular banquet tables, make sure you get the width of them. At the Manitoba Club, they use a “king’s table,” which is nice and wide (that’s what you see here). A lot of venues use narrower tables, which simply gives less space to add in decor. You need to be aware of how much space you have to add in flowers, candles, glassware, and so on.

With this table, we had a lot of space to feature 2 fuller centrepieces, with 3 petite modern stem vase style arrangements of pink anthurium. We tucked in taper candles and still had plenty of negative space — which is crucial in a design. A lot of the time I feel that tables are overloaded, but it can be the negative space that sets off design.

Lounges, baby! I’m excited that Winnipeg’s rental companies are bringing in more options for lounge furniture, because it allows us to create far more interesting spaces where your guests can kick back and enjoy the vibe that you so carefully created.

I love the varied textures that we worked with here, the overhead lighting, the fact that this little brick nook is PERFECT, and obviously, the flowers. A few smaller floral pieces were really cute accents, but the main focal point was a freestanding floral piece that I loved! It brought a fun spotlight of colour and texture.

Simple White and Pink Wedding at Qualico Family Centre

Carmelle and Brandon are such a lovely couple. My husband and I actually went to high school with Brandon, so when Carmelle inquired I was super curious to find out if it was him. Then, I realized that they were also our back lane neighbours at our old house! She used to see my Stone House delivery vehicle driving around the neighbourhood all the time :) It was wonderful to be a part of their simple white and pink wedding this summer at the Qualico Family Centre.

Megan Steen Photography did such an amazing job capturing the sweet, calm nature of this wedding day!

I love the way the soft sage green bridesmaid dresses paired with the delicate pink of the bouquets. There was something about it that was so simple and fresh!

Bridal Bouquet ingredients: pink garden roses, locally grown ranunculus, stock, tulips, hypericum berries, eucayptus and ferns.

This picture of Carmelle stops me in my tracks. Isn't she stunning?

At the reception, we kept the floral decor quite simple. The Qualico Family Centre looks beautiful in soft shades of white, ivory, cream, gold, champagne and green. So, simple arrangements of white hydrangea and eucalyptus foliage was perfect!

Carolyn and Nick's Summer Lake of the Woods Wedding

One misty summer day last year, I headed up to Kenora to the Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club for Carolyn and Nick's wedding. Aside from the touches of rain that sprinkled down throughout the afternoon, it was a beautiful day for the wedding! Nick is from New Zealand, so Carolyn came up with the idea to include plenty of ferns in all of the flower arrangements. I guess ferns grow all over the place over there, though I wouldn't know, having never been!

We met Carolyn's dad at her aunt's cabin, and he boated across the lake to meet the bridal party, and then across the lake again to get to the Yacht Club! It's always an adventure setting up for weddings there, as you never know quite how long it's going to take to get there and how bumpy the ride is going to be. We loaded all the flowers into the back of the boat, and covered it all up so the rain couldn't get to them.

I love the photos of the newlyweds with the the sun setting over the lake in the background!

Bridal Bouquet Ingredients: hydrangea, faith roses, ranunculus, sweet pea, zinnias, blushing bride protea, stock, Queen Anne's Lace, scabiosa, fern, ivy. The zinnias, sweet pea and scabiosa were all locally grown, which was such a treat. My studio was beautiful that week!

Carolyn wanted to keep things soft and feminine, so we used a lot of soft pink and white in the flowers. The blue of the bridesmaids' dresses picked up the hues of the lake really beautifully.
