Reveal: Playful and Crisp Wedding Style Editorial

Today I’m going to walk you through the execution of this editorial I created over the summer. While a photo shoot does not come together in the same way that a real wedding does, I go through much the same process with a lot of the behind-the-scenes design planning.

Right from the onset of a personal project like this, I usually have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. When I’m working on wedding flowers, I also usually have a clear picture of what I want to do for you. But when I’m working on event design for a couple, it’s more of a process of pulling ideas out of you, then teasing them in my mind to see how I can expand on it.

Helllllo playful colour! Today I’m going to walk you through the execution of this editorial I created over the summer. While a photo shoot does not come together in the same way that a real wedding does, I go through much the same process with a lot of the behind-the-scenes design planning.

Vibe

I always begin event design projects by considering the vibe I (or the client) want to create. With this editorial being a project for myself, a few words kept coming to me: playful, cheerful, crisp. I knew I wanted to evoke a sense of happiness and light-heartedness (and I planned this before Covid hit...who knew how badly I'd need this!!).

To achieve this, I started with the colour palette: lavender, peach, and coral (some of my go-to’s!) and then surprised myself with the addition of yellow and orange. I'm so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone (orange has historically been my least favourite colour, but no longer!), because these two brought the citrusy fresh hints that I needed to break up the femininity of the rest of the palette.

Stationery

Your wedding invitations are one of the first projects that we tackle under event design. The stationery sets the tone and can help to "brand" your wedding -- to give you a definable style and visual direction. For this suite, I asked Robin to explore a design that would feel playful and colourful, with clean, modern lines. I knew I wanted touches of colour, but a good amount of white space to balance out the full palette used elsewhere.

She suggested that we use a vellum outer envelope, to show off the flirty pieces inside, and also added a lot of visual interest through the use of different coloured stocks, the rounded edge, and a tall and narrow menu card and place setting on the table.

Florals

I planned two completely different sets of floral ingredients — a spring set (for my original shoot date), and a summer set. I lucked out with my August shoot date, because I was able to incorporate many of my favourite locally grown summer flowers!

Locally grown flowers have the BEST colour variations, with flecks and speckles that perfectly blend a palette and simply aren't possible with wholesale flowers.

The Tablescape

Full florals in the centre of the table, coloured taper and votive candles, gold-dipped flatware combined with clean, modern place settings…Designing a tablescape is all about layering together varied elements to create a unique, personalized look.

I wanted a clean, minimal base for all my colour, so the foundation of white linens with a white tulle topper was perfect.

The Cake

This cake!

I sent Jenna a really pathetic sketch, after having this idea of incorporating both hand-painted flowers and 3D sugar flowers that would move in from the outsides of the cake. I knew I wanted to create some sort of floral piece encircling the cake. I explained this haphazard idea to Jenna and she took it and made it 1 million percent better. This cake is so stunning! It felt fresh, unique, and playful.

The original plan for the cake was so different. This just goes to show you that sometimes, sitting on an idea and seeing where it goes can be a very good thing!

The same goes for your wedding planning: Don't feel like you need to make every decisions or have every answer at the same time.
Some ideas just need time to come together.

I’m so grateful to everyone who shared their talents to be a part of this editorial. I originally started brainstorming this before the first Covid shutdown, and at that point I was just going to focus on a tablescape. Esther suggested that I add a model, and I’m SO glad I followed her advice! One of my favourite details from this editorial was the ensembles created by Maison Corazon for the bride — they could not have been more perfect.

The way this entire project came together was so life-giving and exciting.

Elegant, Rustic Wedding at Hawthorn Estates

Working with Sarah on the floral plans for her elegant, rustic wedding to Cam, at Hawthorn Estates, was a breeze. She came to me with a clear vision: romantic, simple elegance, and wanting the beauty of the venue to shine through.

Hawthorn Estates is a gorgeous venue, which makes it really easy for me to work at! One of my favourite luxurious fall weddings took place there, and with a deep red palette, it looked a lot different than Sarah and Cam’s, which is really cool. I always want each of my weddings to look and feel differently, even when they’re at the same venue.

Sarah requested a very light palette, mostly whites and greens, with accents of a dusty pink and mauve tucked throughout. I knew right away that secret garden roses would be perfect for her - they’re the most amazing shade of pink and almost look like they’re made of paper., they’re so delicate.

Bridal Bouquet Ingredients: secret garden roses, white stock, white ranunculus, blushing bride protea, Dara Queen Anne’s Lace, and calcynia (that perfect, textured filler!) with Italian ruscus and seeded eucalyptus.

The bridesmaids carried petite version, which looked beautiful with their taupe gowns.

romantic Outdoor Wedding Ceremony at Pineridge Hollow Woodlands by Winnipeg Wedding Florist Stone House Creative

Sorry not sorry for all the images of this ceremony set up 😏 Hawthorn has a popular outdoor space they call the marriage hill, with an arch and some large boulders. I personally prefer the solarium, which is attached to the main building and covered but not enclosed. I love the wood beams and the vibe of the whole space — it’s also very adaptable to a lot of different designs.

Sarah wasn’t originally planning to include ceremony flowers, but decided to add them in to the budget and I’m so glad they did because this arch was really beautiful. We did an asymmetrical floral piece over Sarah’s side, couple with two greenery pieces on Cam’s side. I wanted it to feel very organic and fitting with the space, so we grew some greenery up the base of Cam’s side and then capped the top with more greenery.

I don’t think this reception space could possibly be prettier! With that stone fireplace, wood beams, and wood cross-back chairs, Hawthorn Estates makes for a really beautiful blank canvas. I love the bronze linens Sarah chose from Planned Perfectly — aren’t they the perfect neutral, warm addition to the palette and the room? She asked for two centrepieces styles: a low floral arrangements, which I designed in bronze urns, and a greenery/candle combination.

We also added a hanging greenery installation over the head table, utilizing the vintage wood ladder that Hawthorn has hanging there as the base. I’m telling you, they make it so easy for me!

I was also excited to see that Kayla from Laugh Love Cakes was making the cake, and asked for fresh flowers to be added to it. It was one of Kayla’s first weddings back in the Winnipeg wedding industry and she does such a lovely job every time! I sent along flowers that matched Sarah’s wedding bouquet along with some gorgeous dried pink hydrangea that could not have been more perfect!

Whimsical Garden Inspired Wedding at the Gates on Roblin

I remember being excited when I received Thao’s initial inquiry. She described her vision of a whimsical, dreamy garden inspired wedding at the Gates on Roblin, wanting greenery intertwined with string lights on the ceiling. Suffice it to say, I was pretty enticed with this idea!

I remember being excited when I received Thao’s initial inquiry. She described her vision of a whimsical, dreamy garden inspired wedding at the Gates on Roblin, wanting greenery intertwined with string lights on the ceiling. Suffice it to say, I was pretty enticed with this idea!

And did you know, I’m actually a Preferred Vendor for The Gates? Check out what I designed for their 2019 wedding open house here!

Thao’s bouquet was one of the BEST smelling bouquets I’ve ever made, and it was all because of those garden roses! Bridal bouquet ingredients: pink o’hara garden roses, raspberry scabiosa, dahlias, locally grown lisianthus, ranunculus, waxflower, Queen Anne’s Lace, acacia and eucalyptus.

“It was an absolute dream come true working with Lauren on our wedding florals. She is absolutely brilliant – so creative and talented and truly passionate about her industry and craft. She took our idea of an ethereal whimsical garden feel, added her magic touch and brought the whole vision to life. The sweet scent of the beautifully ruffled pink O'Hara garden roses that she recommended is still etched in my mind!” - Thao and Marc

Floral Hair Comb - Wedding Flower Ideas in Winnipeg

These gorgeous portraits sure make me miss summer! I cannot wait for the days of green grass and the warm summer sun again.

Along with her bouquet, Thao requested a floral piece for her hair. We designed this textured comb, made in a way that it could be applied to her hair in a few ways. You can see that it was worn both with her hair up and her hair down and it looked awesome both ways!

I had nothing to do with their tea ceremony in the morning, but I just had to share this picture - isn’t it SO cute?

For the ceremony, Thao requested my copper arch with an asymmetrical application of fresh flowers that could be moved from location to location. I don’t typically like to have pieces that are going to be moved without me being there, but sometimes it’s just not an option. We first set up the arch outside of Thao’s parents’ home, so as guests arrived for the morning tea ceremony they walked in under the flowers. The entire arch was then moved to the church for the formal ceremony.

I love the way this design came together at The Gates! I was able to accomplish Thao’s vision of greenery floating above the dance floor on the string lights and it really did look SO pretty. It was light and airy, achieving that whimsical aesthetic.

We designed 2 centrepiece styles for the guest tables. The first was a greenery wreath that circled a trio of feminine toned taper candles set in brass candlesticks rented from Something Borrowed. The other half of the tables featured a large gold bowl (part of my rental inventory) with a mostly greenery arrangement that incorporated a few pops of locally grown flowers for colour.

Garden Inspired Wedding Style Spilling Over with Colour

Classic and neutral palettes will always be popular, and for good reason…but for all of you who are in love for colour but might be afraid to use it, this one’s for you!

Coral, peach, blush, taupe, plum, terracotta. Rich, jewel tone greens. Crisp black accents. An energetic palette like this one lends a sense of happiness, of life, to a celebration but here’s the thing: you don’t have to go “Crayola bright” to use vibrant colour. This is bold but still feminine, modern and still elegant.

An energetic palette like this one lends a sense of happiness, of life, to a celebration but here’s the thing: you don’t have to go “Crayola bright” to use vibrant colour. This is bold but still feminine, modern and still elegant.

Many of these florals were locally grown, which makes them even more beautiful - ranunculus, snap dragon, lisianthus, lilies, foxglove. My favourite element to design was the indoor garden - who wouldn’t want to say their vows in the midst of a sweet garden spilling over with colour, fragrance, and beauty?

So let’s talk about COLOUR. Like I said, you don’t need to go Crayola to go colourful. For this palette I layered together coral and peach with subtler shades of taupe, mauve, blush, and terracotta. It feels a little vibrant here because of the fuchsia backdrop I painted, but against white, it’s a little softer.

You know what would be amazing? Getting married right in the middle of a garden grown just for you. Whether your wedding is indoors or out, I would LOVE to make this happen.

And we can’t not talk about that dress! It’s a vintage Donna Karan in a soft taupe silk and it’s AMAZING.

One of my favourite things about SMITH (and, of course, the main reason why I wish I could be invited to a wedding there!!) is the FOOOOOOD. I mean, look at that charcuterie board. Every time I’m setting up a wedding here, they are firing up the kitchen. I steal a glimpse at a menu and literally start to salivate. If that’s not a good enough referral to a venue for you, I don’t know what else could be.

Here, we had the beets with creme fraiche, cauliflower fritters, NY steak, and the charcuterie board.

One of the joys of my career is being selected to work on the full event design for a couple. Even though this was a photoshoot, I still wanted to apply a similar level of focus and detail that I do for a client who has hired me for event design. A detailed design brief develops a layered colour palette, textures, and design ideas that form a really incredible base for your wedding. Interested? Contact me here!

Romantic Garden Wedding at the Gates on Roblin

It’s taken me quite a while to put together this blog post for Sabrina and Giuliano’s garden wedding at The Gates on Roblin, and for a few reasons:
1) Brittany Mahood’s photos are amazing and there are TONS of them so it’s really hard to choose!
2) I loved being a part of this wedding SO much and somehow, finally blogging it makes it really feel over.
3) Along with floral design, I also took care of their entire event design. Sabrina and I walked through every visual aspect of their wedding and designed a gorgeous celebration.

So here we are: a garden-inspired wedding with a palette of mixed pinks and mauves, incredible calligraphy details, mini sized Nutella guest favours, a pasta course…AKA the best wedding a person could ever want to be a guest at!

Sabrina’s bouquet was lush and layered with ruffled blooms, including several varieties of roses and garden roses, ranunculus and Queen Anne’s Lace. I finished it off with trailing Stella Wolfe silk ribbon.

So this stationery…man, was it gorgeous! One of the first things I like to work on with event design clients is their invitations because it really sets the stage for how your guests will experience your wedding and style. I suggested that we work with Jennifer Bianca Calligraphy, and it turned out that Sabrina had already been following her and even inquired with her already! We looked through some of Jennifer’s samples and realized Sabrina was leaning towards a full calligraphy suite. I really wanted to add in some colour and Jennifer had a few gorgeous options for the paper stock in mixed soft pink and mauves. A vellum wrapper and rose gold monogrammed wax seals were gorgeous finishing touches.

What drew Sabrina to The Gates was all of the windows and natural lighting. It’s a beautiful all-white space, but I wanted to make sure that it wasn’t overly stark or crisp. The main thing was bringing in mahogany chivari chairs to add depth. We layered the tables with light grey napkins and rose gold cutlery, plenty of candlelight, and of course, flowers. Since the room at the Gates is so large, we had enough space to play with the floor plan and were able to work in a variety of rectangular tables and round tables, along with an oversized double sided head table. Sabrina had these gold hoops that she wanted added to the head table and some hanging behind the head table, so we added a few floral touches to them to finish it off.
