Old Hollywood Supper Club Vibes Wedding at the Manitoba Club

When the design brief calls for Old Hollywood supper club vibes, I’m in.

Long dinner tables, a rich jewel tone palette, draping to create intimacy, vintage brass vessels, mixed metal accents, and a disco ball dance floor installation were all important ingredients in Lauren and Jeremie’s wedding design at the Manitoba Club.

Let’s dig in to the details!

The Ceremony

Ah, weather. You never truly know what you’re going to get. The sky toggled back and forth between rain and sunshine all day long, so much that we actually originally set up our arch outside just to move it indoors! It was the best call; it had already rained, all the chairs were wet (so were the flowers, but they loved it!) and being indoors was just more reliable and comfortable for everyone.

My favourite part of this deconstructed arch was absolutely the colour. To make sure this delicious jewel tone palette really sing, we designed in pockets of colour. Rather than dividing colours evenly and creating a polka-dotted look (which can end up looking very meh), we concentrated handfuls of a specific colour to create more visual strength. The clusters of the blue delphinium are some of my favourites because of the way the sunlight bounced off the blue and adds vibrancy.

The Flower SElections

When I’m selecting my floral ingredients, there are a few things I put a large priority on: colour and shape. This isn’t really something that you need to worry about, but it’s what sets a design apart as a great design, instead of just a good design.

We were working with this modern jewel tone palette — not the typical deep purple / deep blue / emerald green combination, but rather one with golden mustards, burgundy, coral, mauve, and a dusty blue. The golden tones work perfectly with the Manitoba Club’s yellowy walls, while the richer coral and burgundy add a sense of elevated elegance.

Right off the hop, I knew a few of the flowers I wanted to use: golden mustard roses, pink xpression roses, blue delphinium, and coral dahlias. I also knew that I would need to find a few ingredients that would blend the palette — this is the key to any good design! If you can find a flower that has multiple shades of the palette within a single flower, then you’re golden (and locally grown flowers are always best for this!). For Lauren and Jeremie’s floral ingredients, that was the Queen Red Lime zinnias and brown lisianthus. The two flowers work as a bridge between the brighter and the richer tones, and turned it all into a harmonious design.

The Reception

The goal of the reception design: add a sense of richness and Old Hollywood opulence that would be fitting to the Manitoba Club. I wanted to bring the space to life, moving beyond the basics into an exciting, dynamic design. Here’s what made this look work:

  • Floor Plan: Soiree Event Planning laid out this really clean floor plan, proving that simple is often best. Long tables, laid out end-to-end, with a striking bar on one end and the dance floor on the opposite.

  • Visual Movement: One of my goals in designing a tablescape is the creation of visual movement on the tables. For Lauren and Jeremie’s design, a curated mixture of brass stem vases from Something Borrowed, ceramic compotes and gold vases from my rental collection were combined with taller taper candles, short votives, and lamps. A mix of heights, textures, and sizes of arrangements keeps the eye moving and adds a lot of interest.

  • Depth: With the soft room drapery and subtle taupe linens (all from Planned Perfectly), some contrast needed to be added to give the design strength and a modern edge. I love the black Bentwood chairs from Collective Event Rentals, especially paired with the dark plates (from Union Table) and smoke glassware (also from Planned Perfectly). The moody jewel toned stationery from Kind Regards was definitely the delicious icing on the cake!

FOCAL MOMENTS

From the dance floor installation to the bar, and out to the seating chart and lounge area, we incorporated multiple focal moments to create a major impact.

Lauren wanted a dance floor installation right from the start. The checkered black and white dance floor was an ideal choice for that Old Hollywood vibe, and we added a rich green canopy above that also camoflauged the lighting and disco ball mechanics.

The bar was actually one of my favourite moments: we repurposed the ceremony arches to either side, which served to both keep the bar top clear (no extra floral arrangement necessary!) as well as anchor that side of the room. The bar may have felt a bit like it was floating in the room without the arches…sort of like when your rug is too small for your living room furniture placement.

The seating chart was a labour of love by Soiree! Each frame had to be hung and levelled individually (whew!). The addition of the taupe pedestals was really clever, adding the visual weight the frames needed. And the florals, of course, were chef’s kiss!

Don’t you just love the look of those long tables? Sleek and sexy!

It can be really hard to sift through all of this inspiration that’s available out there, and figure out what you want to do for your own wedding — there are endless ideas out there, after all! Lauren’s initial inspiration images felt a bit scattered — each was cool in its own right, but were lacking a general direction that would naturally tie everything together.

This isn’t uncommon. In fact, I’d say I see it pretty regularly! And this is one of the reasons why I would love for each couple to work with a full service wedding planner and designer. Sometimes we just need help finding that unifying theme, or an impartial voice saying “let’s remove that and do this instead” to help direct your vision into what will work best for you, for your venue, for your budget, and so on. I’m actually planning a kitchen renovation right now, and while I think I could have designed something lovely on my own, I knew that I wanted a guiding hand leading the process and making sure I don’t get stuck in Pinterest trends. Working with an interior designer on this project has been so amazing and I cannot wait for everything to take place. I hope that you’ll see the value in hiring a wedding planner just like I do!
